Interesting Projects
Here are a few of the more interesting projects that I have been working on. For a complete list of projects and experience, see my bio.
Simple Media Services
Simple Media Services is a lightweight asset management system. This system is currently under development, and will be the basis for a customized asset management system and web portal for a yet unnamed client. Simple Media Services is written in .NET and uses Amazon web services for storage, image processing, and payments. Simple Media Services can be used as an inexpensive hosted subscription service, or as the basis of a customized asset management system.
music.of.interest
Music of Interest is a web site I created to deal with a very specific problem. While at work, I was listening to KEXP via their web stream. I was finding that I was continually writing band names on my whiteboard that I wanted to check out later; of course since they were sitting on my whiteboard at work, I never did anything with them. This was silly, so I created music.of.interest as a way to remember and research these bands. By installing a bookmarklet on your browser, you can now quickly record the band when you here it, and then come back later and research that band. Music.of.interest is a Ruby on Rails application.
PlayNetwork, Inc.
If you ever walk into a Starbucks and hear their music playing, you are listening to my software hard at work. I spent eleven years working with PlayNetwork, both as a consultant and an employee, designing and creating the software for their customized audio players. In addition I built or contributed to many of their back end systems (network distribution, cd encoding, reporting). Technologies used range from C++/Assembly language on bare hardware, to C++/Linux, C#, and even a little Python.
Heavy Horses
This is a classic client/server application written in Powerbuilder (which I still believe is one of the best products out there for creating client/server apps). Originally developed for the Clydesdale Breeders of the United States in 1995, this program is used to manage all aspects of a horse registry – registering horses, tracking ownership, managing membership, receiving payments, and for larger organizations, managing workflow. Just so it doesn’t seem completely old fashioned, I do have an additional module that allows registry members to access the horse information online (OK, this is still classic ASP, but maybe one of these days I’ll get it ported over to .NET…).
